What Is a Pokémon Booster Box?

A Pokémon booster box holds 36 booster packs. What comes inside, how it compares to an Elite Trainer Box and Booster Bundle, and which sets don't get one.

🗂️

A Pokémon booster box is a sealed display box of 36 booster packs from a single set. It is the largest standard sealed product for a set and usually the cheapest way to buy packs in bulk. Stores originally used these boxes to sell packs one at a time from the counter, which is why they are also called booster displays.

This guide covers what is inside, how a booster box compares to smaller products, and what to check before buying one.

Quick answer: A Pokémon booster box contains 36 booster packs from one set, and packs from main English sets hold 10 cards each. It has no promo cards or accessories. Main expansions get booster boxes, but many special sets (such as Scarlet & Violet 151, Paldean Fates, Prismatic Evolutions, and 30th Celebration) were not released in booster boxes. For those, the Booster Bundle or Elite Trainer Box is the closest option.

What’s Inside a Booster Box

  • 36 booster packs from the same set
  • 10 cards per pack in main English sets (some special sets use smaller packs; 30th Celebration packs hold 6 cards)
  • No promo, sleeves, or accessories. A booster box is just packs.

Six booster boxes come sealed together in a booster box case, which is how stores order them.

An Elite Trainer Box costs more per pack because you are also paying for the promo and accessories. Our guide to what comes in an Elite Trainer Box has the full breakdown. A Booster Bundle is a small pack-only product, and for special sets without a booster box it is often the cheapest way to buy packs at MSRP. In 30th Celebration, for example, the Booster Bundle is $26.94 for 6 packs.

Which Sets Get Booster Boxes?

Main expansions, like Surging Sparks or Pitch Black, are released in booster boxes. Special sets usually are not. Recent special sets such as Scarlet & Violet 151, Paldean Fates, Prismatic Evolutions, and 30th Celebration came out in Elite Trainer Boxes, Booster Bundles, collection boxes, and tins instead.

If you search for a booster box of a special set and find one, check the listing carefully. It may be a Japanese booster box (Japanese sets use different pack counts and card counts) or a display box someone filled with loose packs.

Japanese Booster Boxes Are Different

Japanese Pokémon booster boxes are a separate product. They usually hold fewer packs than English boxes, and Japanese packs hold fewer cards. Japanese special sets often do get booster boxes, unlike their English versions. Always check whether a listing is English or Japanese before comparing prices.

Before You Buy a Booster Box

  • Check the current price. Booster box prices move after release. You can see current prices for sealed products on TCGPursuit’s sealed price list.
  • Inspect the wrap. Factory wrap is tight and neat. Loose or uneven wrap can mean the box was opened and resealed.
  • Buy from a trusted seller. Local game stores and established hobby retailers are the usual sources. Our guide on where to buy Pokémon cards covers the options.
  • Decide why you are buying. If you want one specific card, buying the single is usually far cheaper than opening a box to find it. Our singles vs. packs guide explains why.
